Use the right measuring stick

Writer's picture: Dr. Dan HaifleyDr. Dan Haifley

“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:” Ephesians 4:13

It was September of 1999. All eyes at the NASA headquarters were intently watching the$125 million dollar Mars Climate Orbiter as the skilled technicians guided it towards the atmosphere of Mars. Suddenly the MCO plunged to oblivion. All attempts to re-establish contact were futile. The ensuing investigation revealed that Lockheed-Martin had engineered the Orbiter to be guided by the Imperial English unit of poundals. However, the NASA engineers were using the metric newton to guide the spacecraft.

Using the wrong measuring stick has caused many problems in our world. In the letters of the Apostle Paul we find many warnings about trying to substitute something for the truth. He says things like: “having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof,” and, “ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” If you try to live the Christian life without the truth of God’s Word you will, like the Orbiter, crash and burn. There is no substitute for God’s Word. You can read other helpful hints and listen to those who want to improve your character, but nothing will change you from the inside out except for the genuine Word of God. Use the measuring stick that was designed for you. Learn to guide your life by using the measurement of Christ.
