Are the "Sons of God" Angels?

Writer's picture: Zachary HaifleyZachary Haifley

There are two theories on who the sons of God are in Genesis chapter 6. One theory

goes like this: “I think the sons of God are angels because that's what I think,

now let’s study what I think”. This is an illogical way to study. There is no biblical evidence to

support this as a starting point. This theory does not come from sound hermeneutical principles and it is an illogical way to study. There is no biblical evidence to support our ideas as a starting point. The ‘sons of God being angels’ theory is a very popular belief without any biblical backing.

Any time I have a question in the Bible I find that if I look at the word or concept through the scriptures eventually it will define itself for me. So, Now let's let the Bible interpret the Bible. Hebrews 1:5 “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?” These are two back-to-back rhetorical questions implying that it is absurd to call an angel a son of God. The verse specifically states that Jesus is the Son of God. It doesn’t quite show who the son(s) of God are but it definitely shows that God has never called an angel a son.

Hebrews 1:6 “And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And

let all the angels of God worship him.” God calls the angels “angels of God”, and not “sons of

God.” Also, notice the “and again”? This is the third time in two verses that God puts a defining

line between the son of God, Jesus, and the angels of God. Angels are called angels and sons

are called sons. Who are the sons of God? There is a lot of scripture telling us who they are and

I can not unpack it all in this article, but we do know the sons of God definitely are not angels. When you are unsure how to define a word, you can not just make up the definition.
