Truth is fallen in the streets

Writer's picture: Dr. Dan HaifleyDr. Dan Haifley

"...Judgement is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter." Isaiah 59:14

Our culture is on fire right now. Everyone is angry and everyone is blaming everyone else for their distress. Equity and equality are important values that we must embrace, but lying and promoting half truths does not fix the problems. This verse from Isaiah says that equity can not enter a place where truth is fallen in the street. Equality can only be achieved by honest and truthful assessments.

Why are we in a hurry to destroy icons like Aunt Jemima, a model and activist for the cause of African American equality. As a result of her financial freedom, which was attained by her contract with Quaker Oats, she was able to spend her life helping many freed slaves find opportunity and status. Why would she not be held up as a hero?

Suddenly, we are tearing down statues and desperately trying to destroy history in an effort to appear like we are not racists. Some misguided and foolish people have decided that abolishing the police force will fix the problem. These things will not accomplish the goals that our culture hungers for.

Equity and equality are very important, but we will never achieve their lofty heights without starting with the truth. There will be no justice without truth. There will be no equity without truth. There will be no peace without truth. Truth is where the discussions need to start.
