Remember Lot's Wife

In Luke 17:32 Jesus makes this ominous statement in the context of the end times, "Remember Lot's Wife." The reference is to the time when God rained Fire and Brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah. The cities of those plains are still a wonder to all. You can search them on the internet and find that to this day the ashes of those cities still stand were they were once burned as a testimony of God's judgement. The petrified ash still contains sulfur pellets that can burn through metal when they are ignited. When God told Lot to leave the city, He instructed him and his family not to look back. Lot's wife turned back to see the destruction behind her and was immediately turned into a pillar of salt. Legends claim a certain pillar of petrified salt that stands in that area is literally Lot's wife.

The lesson application I would like to draw from the story is simple: As you leave this world and all of its shackles behind in your quest to follow God, Do not long for what you are leaving. Let it be buried. Let it disappear in your rear-view mirror. If you allow your mind to be full of what you left, you might possibly return to it and all of the consequences attached to it. An addict who dwells on his/addiction will struggle to break free from it. But one who determines to follow the path of a born-again Christian will find the old addiction disappearing from their mind. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His Glory and Grace.
