“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angles, and have not charity...And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity...And though I bestow all my gods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity….” I Cor. 13:1-3
The first verse in I Corinthians 13 speaks of communication. If we can communicate well even in more than one language and don’t have charity at our core, we are simple wind in a brass instrument or the passing sound of a cymbal. Both temporary noises that go away and are forgotten. The next verse speaks of our vision for the future, our understanding and grasp of things around us, our knowledge and even our faith. These things all sound like a person that is well rounded and someone you would want on your team. However, the writer goes on to say, that without charity, none of this has any meaning. The final statement in this section states that every action I do— even to giving all I have to feed the poor and offering my life as a sacrifice– none of it will bring me any profit at all unless they are motivated by the core value, charity
