“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour;” I Peter 5:8
One of the first lessons to be learned about Satan in the Bible is how easily he can get through our defenses. When Adam was given the charge in the Garden to keep it safe, we find him willing and able to do so. However, before we get anywhere in the story of Eden, there is Satan in the form of one of God’s creatures talking to the closest person to Adam. There is no mention of how he got there. There is no sign of struggle or forced entry. He just showed up. Maybe Adam was distracted by the work he had to do. Maybe he missed a detail that he shouldn’t have missed. Regardless of the mistake and how minor Adam thought it was, Satan exploited it and used it as an opportunity to destroy.
It’s easy for us to ignore the warning signs of his handiwork. We are quick to forgive ourselves for our little weaknesses, but Peter warns us here not to let down our guard for one second. We have the history of mankind to remind us what Satan can do with a little place in our lives.
