"The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat." Proverbs 13:4
There is a basic principle of life explained throughout the Bible in many different ways. We could summarize this principle by saying, "You will reap what you sow." Sometimes it comes in a form like this: "...if any would not work, neither should he eat." In another place it reads like this: "give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:" In each presentation of this truth the Bible is clear that your actions will produce an effect.
In our country today, there are many who would have us believe that it is our duty to feed those who won't work. We are told that it is only fair that money should be taken from the rich and distributed to others who have never tried to earn anything. This is not a Christian concept. It is not a Biblical concept. It is not a scientific concept. If you don't do anything, you won't produce anything.
In the verse above the principle dives even deeper into our soul. This speaks of our contentment and satisfaction with life. Someone who doesn't do anything may be interested in the rhetoric of a politician who promises to take money from someone else and give it to him. He or she may vote for that person who promises these things. Indeed, the reprobate politician might get elected and raise taxes on productive citizens to get the money to keep his or her promises. However, the sluggard who sits at home and "collects his check" from the government misses out on the filling of the soul. The satisfaction that comes from producing something.
If you truly wish to be happy, stop sitting around hoping your ship will come in. Stop waiting for another stimulus check or free health care program. Get off your couch and do something. Try to build the things that you desire. Work for your dreams. This will fill your soul with happiness like nothing else.
