“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” I Corinthians 15:14
Christianity's main premise is not to make the world around us a better place. Many religions have that focus point and some of them do a pretty good job at influencing in a positive way. Yes, we are to be salt in our culture. We are supposed to influence those around us, but that is not the core value of Chrisianity.
The main ingredient, the central theme, the foundational truth of Christianity is that Jesus Christ defeated death. No one else has accomplished that. Not only did He defeat death physically and promises us that some day we will also defeat death physically, but He also promised to make us alive spiritually.
Being a Christian will make you a better person, and it will make you into a positive influence in the world around you, but if you get away from the truth that Jesus is alive, your Christian faith is pointless.
