Can you fix an idiot?

"Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil." Proverbs 3:7

Do you ever feel like you are surrounded by idiots? The feeling is quite common. T-shirt makers have capitalized on the feeling by coming up with little slogans reflecting this feeling just to make us all laugh. Sayings like, "It's hard to soar with eagles when you work with Turkeys," have found their way into every possible marketable venue. Oh and don't get me started on politics. Pictures of donkeys and elephants, caricatures of every politician we don't agree with it, memes making the politician we disdain look like a buffoon have all found their way into the public square. And then, of course, their is the age old conflict between city folk and those who live in, what one song writer coined, "fly over country."

All of this stems from a fleshly pride that we are smarter than everyone else. We know and understand things that "they" just don't get, and therefore we are wiser than "they." That is not how a Christian is supposed to conduct himself. I know it, but I must confess I find myself in this place more than I should.

In Proverbs 3:7 the Lord give us the antidote for the sin of pride. It has to do with focus. When we start thinking that we are smarter than everyone around us, we are looking at the wrong thing. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That is the place we should look. Turn our eyes to the Lord and behold His majesty. Consider His Wisdom. Consider His Power. Then when we turn our eyes back on ourselves we will see ourselves as He does. We will notice the "beam in our own eye." We will put our focus on fixing the brokenness over which we have control. And then...maybe then....God can use us to fix the brokenness around us.
