“Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. Psalm 78:33
Vanity is defined as something that lacks real value: hollowness; worthlessness; trivial; pointless. It is hard to imagine living a life that is defined in that way - where one day of pointless activity leads into another day of emptiness. The sad truth is that this passage is referring to a period of 40 years. Just think of it 40 years where nothing of any purpose was accomplished. All around us are lives just like that. Lives that are completely consumed in the trivial, pointless and worthless.
And then there is the other thing... It appears that God was the one making their lives pointless. You see, He has this thing... If you want to worship frogs, He will give you more than you can handle (Remember the Egyptian plagues?). If you want no boundaries, He will remove them, but then you will have to deal with the complete lack of protection in your life. If you want to spend your life on empty, vain, worthless pursuits, He will give you more than you can imagine. He will give you what you want. Are you sure you want it?
On the other hand, if you want to do something meaningful with your life, start by spending your life on that which is eternal. Watch what God can do with someone completely surrendered to Him. If the desires of your heart are to really make a difference, then delight yourself in the Lord, "and He will give you the desires of your heart."
