A little fly can wreck a lot of work

Writer's picture: Dr. Dan HaifleyDr. Dan Haifley

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour” Ecc. 10:1

This verse has always fascinated me. I can almost see the old shop with it’s open windows and doors. Kettles and cauldrons of all sorts are scattered around with a wise old gentleman mixing things from his shelves into them. He’s been at it since dawn, trying to get just the right scent so that he can bottle his special perfume and sell at the open marketplace. Suddenly without warning a house fly comes through the open window. The fly, attracted by the sweet smell and unnoticed by the perfume maker, skims low over the surface of the open cauldron and gets to close as the hot liquid sucks him in. Instantly burned the little fly completely destroys the complicated mixture of scents.

So it is with just a little folly in our lives. Just a little indiscretion can in an instant destroy the labor of many days.
