What do you plan to accomplish this year?

“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:” Isaiah 28:10

What do you plan to accomplish spiritually in the new year? Do you plan to be a better Christian than you are right now by the end of this year? You can be. But don’t wait for a miraculous epiphany to change you into the person you hope to become. The changes that God makes in us are so gradual that you don’t usually notice them.

Remember when you used to measure yourself along the door jam. Maybe you made marks to show your growth. You didn’t notice the growing but when you looked back it surprised you. Recently I saw the work of a photographer who took a picture of his daughter every week of her life until she was 21. He then combined the pictures in a time lapse video. It was fascinating to see how the baby became a full-grown woman. Each week a very tiny change happened. You could hardly see it sometimes. There were some weeks were there seemed to be no change at all, but sure enough it was happening.

Spiritual changes happen in the same way that the physical changes happen. It depends on your diet and exercise. The Word of God will change us but not usually in drastic, earth-shattering moments. As Isaiah says in the verse above, it is done line upon line, here a little, there a little. Determine this year to make those small incremental changes in your life as God shows them to you from His Word, then look back at the end of the year with the satisfaction of knowing that you have grown and matured as a Christian. -D.H.
