Are you looking for Power with God?

“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Matthew 4:10

Our verse for today is taken from the story of the temptation of Christ in Matthew 4. In this period of temptation, we see Satan attack Jesus in the vulnerable places of a righteous person.

First, we see him go after the Base nature place. This is where, after 40 days and nights of fasting, Jesus found himself hungry. His basic human nature needed sustenance and the devil decided to tempt him to get His needs met by breaking the natural laws for his own personal satisfaction. This is a lesson for us when we go to prayer about our personal needs. God provides for us in many ways. Miracles are not always necessary for our daily supply. Sometimes we just need to work so that we can eat.

Second, we see Satan going after His Spiritual walk. He takes Jesus to the top of the Temple where God is worshiped and uses scripture to make his point. Here we see perverted religion in all its glory. Going to church and reading scripture does not always result in the right path. Why you go to church and why you read scripture become essential.

It is the third temptation that really caught my attention. You see, the thing or person that you worship is at the deepest level of your heart. The devil tried to get our Savior to worship power. The lust for power is quite possibly the biggest down fall of a follower of Christ. Books are written on the subject. A quick google search produces articles with titles like "The secret to power with God" and "Infusing your life with the power of God." People that seem to be able to “bring down fire” become our heroes and we worship them. They are paraded on platforms and TV shows crowds come to see them and hear them because of a name they have made for themselves. Churches split over who has the most power….and you can fill in the blanks.

We are careful to wage war with Satan at the Base nature level. Many of us contend for the faith against the perversion of the Gospel. But that lust for power knocks a lot of us completely out of the race. I think it might even be termed “the condemnation of the devil.” Don’t seek power…seek God. Worship Him and Him alone.
